Cortical mapping and preparation for fiber dissection

Master station: Lorenzo Bello and Mitchel S. Berger

Working on cadaveric hemispheres, participants rehearse anatomical orientation, probe handling and cortical mapping sequences using monopolar and bipolar stimulation probes. Faculty demonstrate each step at the master station and relate electrode placement to task selection, response interpretation and the choice of cortical entry.

17:00–17:30 Motor, premotor and supplementary motor areas — L. Bello

Identify perirolandic and medial frontal landmarks; rehearse probe positioning and mapping order; and discuss the selection of stimulation and monitoring for motor output, skilled movement and movement initiation. Relate the cortical map to the planned access and first steps of resection.

17:30–18:00 The perisylvian language network — M. Berger

Orient the frontal, temporal and parietal opercula; rehearse systematic cortical sampling with appropriate probes; and connect naming, repetition and speech tasks to the interpretation of positive and negative sites when selecting the operative corridor.
